On 30 June 1934, Hitler arrested, caged and eventually killed Rohm and as many other members of the SA as benefited him, having been informed that Rohm was to seize control by the powers that hated him within the SS.

Rohm, locked in a room and invited to commit suicide, was shot by an SS leader, along with six more SA officials on Hitler's order on 1 July.

When vice-chancellor von Papen complained to Goering, he returned home to find his staff under arrest and his press secretary dead, his home surrounded by the SS and the phone cut off. He was no longer in control of Hitler.
